The Service Learning Initiative at South Central College (SCC)

The South Central Service, Work & Learning Center assists in the coordination of Service Learning options for South Central College students and faculty.

In addition to providing a point of entry for Service Learning inquiries at SCC, the Center also provides a regional database of service learning sites, resources on Service Learning and training and tools for Service Learning sites in the surrounding communities.

Service Learning Definition

Service Learning is a method of instruction that emphasizes both the service and the learning goals in such a way that both occur and are enriched by each other. The key components of service learning are:

  • Student Ownership,
  • A genuine community need,
  • School/community partnerships,
  • Preparation and reflection opportunities and,
  • Clear connections to curricular learning objectives.

The Service should drive the learning. It is not an add on. Service-learning projects emphasize both sets of outcomes-the service and the learning- and the design of the project results accordingly. Most prominently, projects that emphasize learning always include a strong reflective component where students utilize higher order thinking skills to make sense of and extend the formal learning from the service experience.

SERVICE LEARNING Experience

Students and teachers collaborate with community organizations to provide service learning opportunities. These opportunities are designed to help students apply a wide range of skills, while developing habits of active citizenship. Through service learning activities, students develop a deeper understanding of the world and their place in it.

"By its very definition, civic responsibility means taking a healthy role in the life of one's community. That means that classroom lessons should be complemented by work outside the classroom. Service-learning does just that, tying community service to academic learning."

Senator John Glenn
The John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy Chair, National Commission on Service-Learning
